Abstract:
This paper examines the performance of an open drive scroll compressor modified to work as an expander operating on ammonia-water working medium. The modelling and simulation of the scroll expander is carried out with EES program. In this study a simulation of the expander performance at various pressure ratios (2-4), expander speeds (2500-7500 rpm) and ammonia concentrations (0.8-0.99) at a constant supply pressure (5 bar) and temperature (105oC) has been presented. The scroll expander produced a work output of 0.29 to 1.5 kW, with isentropic efficiencies of between 0.48-0.64. At the assumed in let conditions, the optimum expansion ratio for the expander is 3.
